A vibrant attention to the arts in public places brings a sense of humanity that nothing else can. Many of us (if not all of us) have a longing to be able to speak in a voice that will be heard and understood. Very often, words are not sufficient to express the feelings, hopes, and ideas that we have in our heart of hearts. And we sometimes end up feeling like there is no outlet for our deepest concerns and interests. This is where art stands up and asserts its nature. Art is the natural voice of us people. In whatever form it takes, art is the voice of those deeper desires, honest interests, and unhindered expressions. When we embrace art in our communities we open a door for our natural, comfortable, confident selves. We acknowledge that we love beauty. We begin to have an inkling that we are imaginative beings, that we are not as bound up as we thought. We begin to see that we have ideas that can transform the very context in which we live. It is our ideas and inspirations that will do it!
